Type in how many people are coming and this calculator tells you what size turkey to buy, how many days to thaw it, how long to roast it, and how much of the sides to make.
🦃 How Much Turkey Per Person
Plan about 1¼ pounds of whole turkey per person, or 1¾ pounds if you want leftovers for sandwiches. The bones are heavy, so a 15-pound bird gives you less meat than it sounds. For a turkey breast, plan about ¾ pound per person.
🧊 Thaw It In Time
The safest way is in the fridge: about one day for every four pounds. A 16-pound turkey needs four full days, so for Thursday, it goes in the fridge Sunday. In a hurry? Submerge it in cold water in its wrapper, changing the water every 30 minutes, about 30 minutes per pound.
🔥 Roasting Times
At 325°F, an unstuffed turkey takes about 3 to 3¾ hours for 12 to 14 pounds and 3¾ to 4¼ hours for 14 to 18 pounds (USDA chart). It is done when the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F on a meat thermometer. Let it rest 30 minutes before carving so the juices stay in.
